Facade cladding

Was in Apeldoorn the day before yesterday and came across this cladding made of roof tiles. In use around 1900 on bulb barns in north Holland and adopted by the architects of the Amsterdam School it is still sporadically applied.  If I am not mistaken, this block of houses was designed by v.Gameren and Mastenbroek who were then employed by us as collaborating architects now both continued as independent architects.

Part of the concrete forest

 What it takes in Almere to build a six-storey flat with 32 appartments. The piles are on average 10 to 12m long and have a head size of 45 x 45 cm or 50 x 50 cm. In earlier days this used to be done with wooden piles but if these are not submerged in ground water, they rot and a lot of houses now suffer from this and there is no cheap solution.

I am singing

The sign of one of the largest roofing materials companies in the netherlands for flat roofs, seen yesterday in the port of Rotterdam. One for Signs2 here.

Welcome to Amsterdam

If the unsuspecting traveller now comes out of the central station on the west side, he or she will see the centre, but can only reach it after a detour. A bicycle garage will be constructed under the water of the open harbour front and makes all transport in front of the door impossible. Nice entrance and the view of the sky doesn't make it any more fun. One for Skywatch Friday here.

Cast-iron as fence. Unbeatable in sustainability. Now not more in use because the industry to make it is nearly extinct. One for good fences here.

Bricklaying pavement in the Netherlands

From the factory already laid in a loose connection.

A special machine picks them up and laid them down.

Now a road worker must fill the gaps.

It takes one fifth of the time from the old method laying them all by hand.

Seen yesterday in Gouda at a family visit.

Art fence

Bridge nr. 165 also called the "Raampoort" bridge in Amsterdam contains this fence, looking more like an artwork. Until now I couldn't find the name of the designer of this fence. One for good fences here.

Expensive

Never knew we had signs in the pavement (Dam Square) made of marble for something normal as indicating the bus lane. When I think about it never saw a bus there or it must be one packed with tourists. I wonder how long it lasts. One for sign, signs here.

Bridge fence.

A bridge fence from bric, concrete and iron. A lot of materials. In the background the Montelbaans tower from 1516. This tower never had a church but was part of the defense works around amsterdam and got its white upper part with clock in 1606 designed by city architect Hendrik de Keyzer . Colorful material.

On the way back from yesterdays tunnel we saw an exposition about designs of the architect Berlage and followers of his ideas named " Berlage the Godfather of Dutch Design". Here the layers cloud chair by Richard Hutten made for the Danish textile producer Kvadrat.

The chair refer to the pigments found in the Painted desert Arizona.

Architecture trip to Copenhagen(8)

Grundtvig's Church made by Peder Vilhelm Jensen-Klint after he won a competition in 1913. In 1921 started the build and in 1926 the tower section was completed.

Further work on the interior and on adjacent buildings continued until 1940 and was completed by Klint's son Kaare Klint after his father's death in 1930.

The triple-aisled hall church is 76m (259 ft) long in total and 35m (115 ft) wide; the nave has a height of 22 m(72 ft).

The church contains lot of daring brick details and the style is called expressionist church architecture. ( All details from wikipedia here.)

Of course there is a Votive ship and it is nearly the only kind of sober decoration that I could find in this Lutheran church.
