In a previous life

 

Bieb and I were on vacation in Copenhagen. There we also visited Christiana. There were a lot of colorful scenes of which here is an example. Very worthwhile and worth a visit from Sami for her Colourful World here if she not already have done that.

How does it look today ?

Copenhagen is not a city for murals. Only in Christiania and if the architect cooperated it in his design you see some but otherwise only on fences around building yards. Even the in other cities ubiquitous graffiti is absent.

This in a staircase falling man is also not one of the more cheerful images. So far the murals in Copenhagen and I dedicate this post to monday murals here.

Grundtvig's Church made by Peder Vilhelm Jensen-Klint after he won a competition in 1913. In 1921 started the build and in 1926 the tower section was completed.

Further work on the interior and on adjacent buildings continued until 1940 and was completed by Klint's son Kaare Klint after his father's death in 1930.

The triple-aisled hall church is 76m (259 ft) long in total and 35m (115 ft) wide; the nave has a height of 22 m(72 ft).

The church contains lot of daring brick details and the style is called expressionist church architecture. ( All details from wikipedia here.)

Of course there is a Votive ship and it is nearly the only kind of sober decoration that I could find in this Lutheran church.

The Magazine du Nord on the Kongens Nytorv reminds very strong on a french department store. It was first a hotel but the shop took over the hotel part by part until 1889 the whole hotel was becoming the shop.

Their design floor is really remarkable but helas no photo's. Instead here a piece of their ground floor polished until it shines like a mirror. One for weekend reflections here.

This artwork from Bjørn Nørgaard, lay just near our hotel Bella Sky and is called lovers isle. A concrete bridge leads you to the island itself, and in the middle there is a granite pillar ornamented with female bodies over which water constantly flows down. Around the column, there are four pavilions with roofs of colored glass. The dramatic sky made the situation more intense so I dedicate this one to skywatch friday here.

 In Ørestad you find also the new IT university of Copenhagen, founded in 1999 and moved to its new destination in 2004. The design is from danish architect Henning Larsen. Another building from him you can find on Biebs blog of today.

No trip to Copenhagen without a visit to Christiania, the free town on a former marine area.

Its free to sell cannabis and to smoke it in this part of town.

Then I saw this sign and I must admit that I can understand it. Lots of tourists coming to look what you are doing gives a bit of a hunted feeling. One for sign, signs here.

As everybody knows Copenhagen is also a city for bikers. What is stunning for someone from a bikers city also (Amsterdam) is the quality and design of Denmark's bikes.

Okay, I admit that we have that bikes also but you will never see it locked on the street in danger of theft. Not here.

Look at that rent a bike display.

All electric with a belt instead of a chain and with a kind of ipad display. Not something you would let out on the streets in the netherlands.

I end with this wheel on a bike just for the daily house work traffic. Okay its locked but it looks great just on the street. One for ruby tuesday too here.

When you walk out of the hotel to the housing apartments the first one you see is the Mountain Dwellings by BIG.

The 80 apartments are forming a hill with a hollow underside used for parking.

Every level has its own color.

On an ingenious way a mural of stacked cars is incorporated in the deposited concrete of the entrance referring to the stacked construction and to the neutral ecological construction by placing a deer on top. One for monday murals here

What you see when you arrive by bus on your 4 star hotel Bella Sky in the Ørestad area of Copenhagen.

This hotel, designed by 3XN architects (Nielsen,Nielsen and Nielsen) from Copenhagen was completed in 2011 and contains on its 23 floors 812 rooms.

Back from Copenhagen I can say that the city is on the moment one big building yard with a big traffic jam. Only with a bike, subway or walking you can reach your destination. No wonder that the fences of some yards are covered with (laughing) mirrors as here on the famous Kongens Nytorf the big public square in the middle of the city. One for weekend reflections here.
