Everyone should be free to choose their basis of belief. Represented by this statue of philosopher Spinoza by sculptor Nicolas Dings placed near his former residence on the Zwanenburgwal. The artwork contains numerous symbols. The collared parakeets and sparrows represent "strange and rare birds," the roses recall the signet ring worn by Spinoza. Next to the statue is a granite block with twenty equilateral triangles. It refers to the craft that Spinoza mastered: grinding lenses. Moreover, it also refers to the philosopher's sharpened mind. The seagull proves that even today there is still room for strange birds in Amsterdam.
I am weirdly reminded of an iron maiden.
