Open sewage ponds do not seem appealing, but the idea of a zero energy house certainly does. If we are going to survive on this planet, we had better solve our energy problem.
I think the open sewage would be quite controversial here. The vast majority of roofs here are covered with asphalt shingles which can last up to about 25 years in our climate. There seems to be a move towards metal roof coverings and flat roofs almost all use membranes now.
