At the corner of yesterdays post you find the Oudezijds Kolk, a narrow lock between the Oosterdok and the Oudezijds Voorburgwal. The Kolksluis is one of the oldest locks in Amsterdam that has been in use since the Middle Ages. The main functions of the lock are to protect the city against flooding and to refresh the water in the canals.
That is a longtime for anything to be still in use today.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenSo ancient!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThose winches look like they were designed in the Middle Ages.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThe fundamentals still appear not too different from our canal.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThat's pretty impressive that it's still functioning today.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenStill doing it's job well after all this time.. that's endurance for you ☺ Happy weekend to you both s.c.
