Here you see a typical amsterdam street urinal from around 1900. They discharged directly in the channel so you find them always in the neighbor of one. Since it is forbidden to discharge sewage waste in the channels since 1970 a lot disappeared and the others are now connected to the city sewage. Still when there are big festivities or other events with lots of public the government place plastic ones so the men can go for free. For the ladies there are toilet cars but not free I am afraid.
