Loevenstein

On the grounds of castle Loevenstein, a place where the Dutch for 650 years defended Holland against intruders from the east and south I found this very small stone saying A.T.J Herkenraad CaptainCommander of Loevenstein passed away at 7 may 1836.

If you look at the size of the defending works the stone is very little indeed. The castle is also famous for the escape of an important prisoner on 16 march 1622. The writer and jurist Hugo de Groot ( Grotius ) also known for his work about sea justice ( Mare Librum ) escaped by means of a book chest and fled to Paris.
I dedicate this to Taphophile Tragics.

  2. Interesting 'take' on the castle. A different look then what I imagine a castle to be.

  4. A modest headstone, but full of respect for the Captain.

  5. The castle is more like an overgrown house, really. However, I too, love its simplicity. Over those hundreds of years, may more soldiers surely died defending the castle. I wonder where they were born. I would love to be able to do one of those landscape x-rays and see if those lawns are riddled with buried soldiers!

Is that a gate-house over there on the right? I do like the roofline ...

  6. I am very impressed by this castle. Very formidable indeed. It has such a solid look about it.. immensely heavy and dense. An interesting place, thanks for educating me (again).
