Taphophile-tuesday

Here you see a part of the old jewish cemetery in Prague. Some people believe its more than thousand years old. By jewish law it is especially forbidden to remove a tombstone and when there was no more area available the then existing tombstones where covered with earth and the people started again to bury. 12 burial layers are discovered and 12000 tombstones are visibly today. The total burials is estimated on a total of 100000 and the oldest one is from 1439. It was in use from the early 15 century till 1787. For more taphophile tragics look here.

  1. I guess there's no limit on the number of bodies you can bury in a cemetery.

  2. That feels wrong, somehow. Yet, I don't know why - bodies will decompose, so why not layer.

  4. Interesting solution to running out of room. Makes for a lot of markers, though.

  8. Twelve layers ... 12. Meaning one on top of the other, covered with soil. So you can move the headstone but not the remains. I quite like this photograph of the tumble of headstones. Especially with the afternoon light on that distant wall.

I cannot even imagine a headstone with 1438 inscribed upon it. That is what I treasure about parts of Europe - its age, and its treasures. I guess the wars, however, have destroyed a lot of what once was.

Thank you so much for this post, SC. I did not know about that aspect of the Jewish tradition.

  11. I remember that cemetery but only from outside of the gate because I was too cheap to pay to go in. :)
