As your photo shows, wet streets at night can be magic. Great photo.
You asked about cannons at Montjuic Castle in Barcelona. I believe the one shown is a Krupp cannon installed in the later part of the 19th Century, and likely never fired in anger. But Montjuic Castle has a dark history. In the Catalonian revolt of 1842 the rebels succeeded in expelling the Spanish army from the city, but did not take the Castle. The Castle them bombarded the city with 1,012 shells causing destruction and death. The Spanish army won that battle, but a second revolt in 1843 resulted in a second and more devastating bombardment of the city. General Franco used the Castle during the Spanish Civil War, 1936-1939, as a prison and executed thousands of Popular front soldiers. The last cannons installed at Montjuic Castle were in 1945, Vickers shore battery guns. Don't think they have ever been fired in anger. Military weapons are often a waist of money. The Castle is now a museum.
Thanks for your answer. I know that the ring of Forts build around Amsterdam in 1880 costed the half of the total state budget at that time and they were never used and were in WWII obselete.
SC you take really good night shots. The wet streets are a enhancement to the scene.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenHih... The rain and lights are always best in the city... for reflections, of course.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenMaybe the only good reason for sodium vapor lights. And I suppose the electricity consumption. But they look strange.
