The poem is from Jacob v. Lennep . A politicus who lived from 1802 till august 1868 in Amsterdam. The painting is from Rombout Oomen made in 2004 and was on that moment the biggest in Amsterdam and gave a lot of consternation as you can read here. One for monday murals here.
it's difficult to please everyone
BeantwoordenVerwijderenDe link ook even opgezocht. Inderdaad behoorlijk controversieel!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWhat a neat mural! Happy Monday, enjoy your new week!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenJust glad it's not on the side of my house. :-)
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI can imagine that a naked woman in a mural isn't to everyone's taste...
BeantwoordenVerwijderenOh... I shall in Amsterdam too on Saturday 9th April on a day tour before my flight at night ! Will be nice to explore a few hours of the city before my flight.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenHope it will be a nice encounter.
VerwijderenWell they do say the success of street art depends on the amount of discussion it causes.. I would say this one could be described as brilliant in that respect s.c. Really enjoyed this post :)
BeantwoordenVerwijderenIf this mural was in Canada the Do Gooders would demand it's removal.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenPS: I am not that kind of do gooder.
Great post! Love the mural. Thanks for the links.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWhat a great mural! Seems to me it shows the power of women. Glad to hear that after all the controversy, the decision is to keep it as it is.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenGlad to see the biggest and most controversial mural in Amsterdam.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI like it!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenLove it!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenHave a Happy Week!!
Peace :)
My first thought was they's never get away with that kind of mural in the US! Artistically though I think it's pretty visually compelling (without knowing the backstory).
BeantwoordenVerwijderenSince I don't know Dutch I can't get the gist of the poem but the illustration says enough. The contrast of all the modern equipment at the bottom makes the picture.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenAn amazing painting, and it really makes me curious to read the poem. The link tells a fascinating history.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenNow that is one impressive mural and verse too.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWow, what a statement piece. After all the controversy, it's still in place. Thanks for contributing to this week's Monday Mural.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenIt's my life
