Where words come from

Here the river Corrib going through Galway on its way to the Atlantic Ocean.

Despite Galway is a very lively and fun city partly due to the presence of a university, it is also the source of the word lynching. In 1493 the son of the mayor committed a murder in front of a lot of witnesses. No one dared to condemn him  except his father FitzStephen Lynch. He threw his son James from the window above with a rope around his neck, hence the word lynching. This memorial on the wall was installed in 1854. One for shadow sunday shot here.

  2. That's a wrenching story, The grays in that first photo seem to contradict the "lively and fun" description, but I guess people would come up with creative ways to combat the dreary.

  4. Amazing story of parenting at its toughest! The crumbling ruin enhances the story, too.

  6. I've been to these spots and taken something much like these photos. My father's family is from County Claire, just to the south. Have a walk up the pedestrianized street, sip a pint and listen to the local musicians.

  7. A rather bleak and dreary scene - and history to match. So different to the warm and vibrant colours and climate of Australia.
