Bauhaus visit.

The first building we visited, the Bauhaus Institute in Weimar, designed by Henry v.d. Velde (a belgian architect ) and build between 1904 and 1911 as a school for arts and craft was covered in scaffolds. The institute itself established in 1919 and was here until 1925 when it moved to Dessau forced by the politics of that time.

Inside we saw a lot of famous murals at the staircases. This one made by Oscar Schlemmer restored not so long ago after the fall of the DDR and after a giant search in a lot of archives because the nazi's  didn't just painted it over but had also first removed the whole plaster layer just to prevent to find it back.

Here the workroom of the first director of the institute, the architect Walter Gropius.

The side facade of the student ateliers building also from Henry v.d. Velde on the other side of the street. Still to see some influence of the art nouveau period that was the first style that Henry v.d. Velde used. Also nice the windows made from iron profiles grabbed from then then just new car industrie as the story goes. They could be opened with very ingenious constructions I will show in a next post.
