Fortified bridge

The Valentre bridge over the river Lot near Cahors in France. It seems to be the only fortified bridge in the whole of Europe. The building started in 1308 and was ready in 1378. The bridge was restored in 1879. I photographed the bridge in 2008 when on holiday in France. Then 630 years old.

Nearing the bridge you think that you are reaching Disneyland.

  2. Not only is it fortified but it is also beautiful. I'm surprised it survived WWII. I viewed on Google street view and the whole area looks like a photographer's paradise.

  5. Francophile «Louis» particularly liked this post, SC! «Louis» knew of this bridge, but had never actually seen photos of it. As others commented above it is amazing that this bridge survived the two brutal wars of the 20th century. «Louis» thanks you for linking this with Sunday Bridges.

  6. That is an amazing bridge - think how much work it must have taken to build all those centuries ago. Nice photos!
