Architect bridge

The Berlage bridge in amsterdam is an important bridge connecting amsterdam east with amsterdam south over the river amstel. Designed by Berlage, also an important architect of his day around 1900. The custom to give design commissions for bridges to architects continues until this day.
One for sunday bridges here.

  6. Frost is normal here, budding trees in December is not. The bridge would be difficult in keeping painted with that two-tone scheme which looks sharp.

  7. «Louis» likes the idea of commissioning architects to design the bridges. In the several posts you've done about architect-designed bridges, you've shown the wisdom of that practice. «Louis» thanks you for linking this to Sunday Bridges. Also, «Louis» really likes the masthead photo you are using.

  8. RE your comment that the green cantilever bridges «Louis» has shown in recent weeks for Sunday Bridges might be a spin-off of the Bailey Bridges of World War II, you may very well be correct. This bridge at Pescadero certainly looks like a Bailey! The green cantilever bridges «Louis» has shown also very closely resemble the old (opened in 1937) cantilever section of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.

  10. A different approach. I'm no expert but I thought that civil engineers do it in this country. The colors of the bridge and water work well together.

    1. It was brick outside, concrete inside. But not long ago the bridge is renovated and the part that opens is now from a steel structure but you see it only from underneath. By mine knowledge it was the only bridge Berlage made and he had help from ir. Cornelis Biemond a civil engineer from public works of the city of amsterdam department bridges who was responsible for the construction. Berlage was responsible for the design.
