The Forth bridge near Edinburgh

Started in 1883 and completed in 1890 this 2.5 km long bridge was the first complete steel railway bridge in the world. I passed it on holiday in 2010 when they where in a process of refurbishing the whole structure . This proces started in 1998 and was done in 2009 taking longer then building it.
But without the cost of 57 lives during building it. More about the bridge you can read here.

  2. The bridge gave us the saying "painting the Forth Bridge" as a euphemisim for a "never ending task" - once you'd got to the end you had to start all over again. Following the process you mentioned it no longer needs to be continually painted.

  3. a friend told me it is always winter in scotland. Does that affect the endurance of the bridge? such an old bridge.

  4. Rooflines on the houses on the lower left almost seems to be echoing some of the lines on the bridge.

  6. This is one bridge we rode across. It is n awesome feat of architecture. Glad to hear it had been totally refurbished and straightened, but it is sad to hear of te deaths of the workers. genie

  7. That's one impressive old cantilever-truss bridge! I can't help but see those white patches as band-aids, though. :-)

    You may want to take a second look at my bridge in the rice terrace mountain. What you saw as a wire is part of a plant in the back. There were NO railings here. You can see the drop in the 2-minute video I posted in Part II today. :-)
