Almere is a new town near Amsterdam and started in 1975. It was and is to capture the overflow of people wanted to live in Amsterdam for which is no more living space. We have now 180.000 inhabitants an the goal is to become the 4st city of the Netherlands with 380.000 inhabitants over 30 years. Of course in such a young city a lot of things need time to grow but on the whole it works. The part where it is lying is a so called polder made out of a part what we call the IJssellake in 1965. So everything is really fresh .
Building a city from scratch, seems like a challenge to balance organic growth with planned development, zoning laws, and the like. Hope it is successful!
It should be a fascinating case study for students of city planning. It seems the 70's saw a heightened interest and focus on urban development issues. With your background in architecture, I wonder what your appraisal would be.
