Trompe-l'oeil mural

The whole facade of this 16 century building at the harbor of Genoa is in reality a mural. It is done so clever that even close with your eyes on the facade it is difficult to see. From all the old buildings in Genoa 9 out of 10 have such facades or a part of it is tromp-l'oeil. This technic was already used by the ancient greeks and romans. This building is called Palazzo San Giorgio and you are seeing a 16 century  increase of a middle age building from 1260 which hold the government of that time. The facade painting from Lazzaro Tavarone (1606-1608) was discovered in 1990 during an renovation . The building contains now the offices of the harbor authorities.

I hope that with this shot you can see that it is really painted. If you go look for it you find this kind of technic on and in a lot of buildings in Italy. I dedicate this post to monday murals here .

  5. Fantastic mural. I see St. George killing the dragon. Would love to know how that relates to a harbor building. Usually you expect to see this kind of work on interior walls. That they have several buildings painted like this is impressive. Wonderful choice for Monday Mural. Thanks for joining us this week.
