Taphophile-tuesday

One of the many graves in Ouradour. A little place in France where the whole population was murdered by the germans in WWII. On 10 june 1944 the germans locked off the village and captured  190 men. They where forced to barns outside, shot down and afterwards burned inside the barns. Meanwhile women and children where locked in the village church and germans of the second SS panzer division burned the church to the ground. From the 247 women and 205 children only 2 women and 1 child survived. The whole drama took only a couple of hours. The ruins of the village are now a war memorial and contains also the Ouradour-at-Glane Memorial center with found possessions of the former inhabitants.

  1. Those small images of real faces connected with massacre...an unbelievable tragedy. I know the question can't be answered...but...WHY? It all seems so senseless! At least this memorial is a sobering reminder that human life should be valued!

  2. Living in Canada puts one at such a distance from these atrocities that such horrors I cannot imagine.

  3. A tragic day for certain! I like the simplicity of the memorial. And it's nice that people still lay flowers.

  4. What a tragic story, but thank you for showing the image and telling the story of these brave people. By keeping the story alive ... it hopefully will remind us not to do something like that again. Thanks again S.C

  7. Hoi Cat.
After reading wikipedia about the reader
I think this movie doesn't go over this drama. By the way in the dutch village Putten happened something like Ouradour with the difference that only the boys and men where caught and transported to concentration camps. From the 602 men and boys only 49 came back after the war.

  9. I have read about this atrocity in other places, SC. It is hard to know what to say.

I, too, thought The Reader to have been based upon these murders, but it was set in Germany, rather than France.

I am gratified that you have contributed this post today, and for the comments you have received.

A conversation of this type is always a good thing, and perhaps this is our way of ensuring that we do not go down this path again.
