Winter trouble for houseboats.

We have a lot of houseboats in amsterdam. The most are connected with electricity, water and sewage. Now with the cold winter sometimes the water in the water pipe freezes. Then the pipe can get broken. When it is inside the hull the water goes flowing again and when it is not stopped in time the boat sinks just by to much drinkwater. It is the second boat this week which must be saved.

Here you see how it is done. After getting the boat out of the water it is pumped empty and then back because there is no leak. Still it has to dry and the water pipe repaired and better isolated. But I must admit for amsterdam the temperature was extreme low and a lot of isolation was not prepared for it.

  5. Yes, winter is great at the photos, but not in real life. Mostly, the world is never well prepared for cold and snow. The boats are wonderful objects for photo! Have a great weekend, S.C.

  6. wow. what a pain. In NYC if you live on a boat you don't pay taxes (and obviously, rent). Is that the case there, SC?
it hasn't been so cold here. At least it is clear and sunny and beautiful.

  7. Hoi Kitty.
For an official laying permit you have to pay. But then you are connected to the utilities and have all sorts of rights. ( Only there is a stop on the numbers of them). It is not possible anymore to say lets buy a boat and put it here in the canal. You have to buy a boat with its permit. It is forbidden to stay without an permit but sometimes its looked trough the fingers. ( Not in the touristic parts ). A greater problem are the little yachts and sailboats of the people who live in the canal houses and lay that in front of their door. Everybody needs a permit for that to but not everyone get one. Every year the government takes a lot of boats out of the water because they had not paid for a long time or are a really shipwreck and half sunk.

  8. aha. It is not an easy life, though, to live on the water.
it would be cool, though. The romantic part of me would love it.
