Taphophile Tragics

In 2008 my wife and I made a trip to the roots of rock and roll in the deep south of the US. Coming to Memphis we saw also the spot where Martin Luther King was shot down in 1968. On the age of 39 standing before his room at the Lorraine motel.

In 1968, after he was assassinated, Martin Luther King was carried upon a farm wagon drawn by mules to Southview Cemetery in Atlanta, in which town he was born. In 1970, King’s remains were removed from Southview Cemetery to now what is the current King Center campus, and in 2006 his crypt was rebuilt to also include the remains of
Coretta Scott King.

  1. When I hear his "I have a dream" I want to cry - always. But now I know where he died.

  2. Nice addition to the meme. The motel is now the National Civil Rights Museum, and is definitely worth visiting if you're ever near Memphis.

  5. Nice tribute, s.c. I think we need to be reminded constantly of just how awful an event that was in our history, that sadly many would in fact prefer to sweep under the rug...

  6. I made the same pilgrimage to the Lorraine when in Memphis. I was surprised that the museum had preserved both the original facade and also the room Dr. King stayed in. It truly is a time capsule.

  7. Very interesting and of course sad. Is this area sectioned off so people don't use it anymore?

  8. It is interesting - and also a bit eerie - that the facade of the hotel is kept to look as it would have back in 68.

  10. Ah, so it is a museum with the facade preserved. I was going to say that it did not appear to have changed much at all. It was tawdry then, and even more so now. However, I do like the look of that watery 'grave'. It shows a taste for simplicity as does being carried by mules.

  11. That's incredible to think how young he was. What an incredible loss.
I guess it's cool that they preserved this motel.
