Progress

Well the old (or not so old) has to make place for new. This was the post office near the central station Amsterdam opened in 1968 and demolished in 2009. Two weeks ago the last post office in the Netherlands ( Utrecht) was closed. If you need stamps or to post a letter or a parcel now you have to go to a supermarket or a bookshop with a so called post dependance. Fortunately we still have the mail box. On the place of this post office ( 50 metres of one of the busiest railroads in the country) is now the academy of music.

  1. Excellent shot. I see a lot old buildings being torn down and new ones erected in their place.

  3. CaT, I must admit that i know that the building will be changed into a shoppingmall by a collegue from my old firm. But he also changed the headquartes of the abn-amro on the rembrandtsplein in amsterdam into a multi purpose building with keeping the old elements and feeling of that building . The results of that restauration can you find if you google for rijnboutt architects and look there for the bank. Still it is stupid that Holland is a country without a single postoffice for public service.

  4. "Progress", as long as it is for the better of the general public and not the politicians !

  5. This happens everywhere. In our little town we are fortunate to have still some few postoffices, but this super-market idea gets in stronger and stronger. Sad.

  6. In UK, the post offices have been disappearing from villages, and there are less in towns. People are not happy about losing their post offices. In UK, the post office has always been a meeting point for older people.

Because of some annoying messages I have to check the posts sent to my blog. No anonymous remarks, sorry for that.
